8. Water Rights and Mapping
Oregon Water Resources |
At the initial stages of a water dispute or issue, the water professional will likely need to determine the type of water right at issue. The Water Resources Department website provides numerous interactive tools to the public in order to research water rights, create maps, or obtain general information. A first step will be to access the Department’s water rights information system. This database can be used to determine all water rights within a geographical location, within a basin, or belonging to a particular person or company. Once a water use or right is found, electronic copies of the underlying permit, decree or certificate may be downloaded and printed. |

Mapping |
Where the water is used is critical to most water rights inquiries, disputes, or other issues. The ability to map out where water is used is therefore a necessity. The water professional in Oregon often utilizes two main resources at the initial stages of serving a client. |

Images can show water ways, ditches, ponds and other structures at issue. Google Earth should be on every water professional’s computer. |
